Emergency & Disaster Prep Miami-Dade

A hurricane plan for your dog

What to pack, where to go, and the Miami-Dade rules for evacuating with pets.

As the Red Cross puts it, if it isn't safe for you to stay home, it isn't safe for your pets either. Florida's emergency managers are just as clear: don't leave pets behind.

Pack a go-kit

  • Leash, harness and a sturdy carrier or crate.
  • Food and water for several days, bowls, and a manual can opener.
  • Medications, and medical and vaccine records in a waterproof bag.
  • A recent photo of you with your dog (proof of ownership if you're separated).
  • Microchip number, your vet's name and number, feeding and medication notes.
  • Poop bags, cleaning supplies, a familiar blanket or toy.

Miami-Dade pet-friendly evacuation centers

  • No pre-registration needed.
  • Bring proof that you live in an evacuation zone, plus vaccination records.
  • Dogs need a current rabies vaccine and a visible Miami-Dade license tag.
  • Up to four pets per household. At least one family member stays at the center with the pets.
  • Check the county's pet preparedness page (opens in a new tab) for the current list of what to bring.

Plan ahead

  • Find pet-friendly hotels or friends outside your area before storm season.
  • Arrange a neighbor who can help if you're not home.
  • Keep your microchip details and license current.
  • Practice getting your dog into the car or carrier calmly.

After the storm

Fences and gates may be damaged, and familiar smells washed away. Keep your dog on a leash, and check the yard for debris and standing water. If your dog goes missing, start with I lost my dog.
