Our story
Bentley's Playhouse is a grassroots Miami animal rescue founded by Cata Balzano in August 2022. Dogs come into Cata's home, where they get vet care, time and patience, and then a family of their own.

Meet Bentley
Bentley is Cata's French Bulldog, the face in our logo, and the rescue carries his name. He was our very first pup, and he warmly welcomed every dog who came after him into his home. That's how his home became a playhouse: a place for pups who needed a second chance.
Bentley showed us that every dog has the potential to be a hero. He was one for Romeo and Kiara.
How it started: Romeo
Romeo was a young French Bulldog who had spent about six months with a backyard breeder before Cata found him. After rescuing him and seeing what he'd been through, we knew we had to help more pups in need.
Romeo became Bentley's Playhouse's first rescue. His arrival is where the rescue work really started.
Rescue, foster, rehabilitate, rehome
After Romeo, the rescue settled into the way it still works today: rescue, foster, rehabilitate, rehome. Whether a dog needs medical treatment, training, or just a lot of love and attention, we do everything we can to help them heal and thrive before they meet their family.
Not every dog takes that last step. Kiara, a blind, special-needs senior Husky, never went through rehoming; she stayed with the family. Fénix was rescued with the same intention as every other dog, but couldn't safely be rehomed, so he stayed too.
Meet Cata
Cata Balzano is a full-time journalist who runs Bentley's Playhouse in her free time, as a volunteer. Her work as a journalist shapes how the rescue runs: research, verify, ask questions, and find the right people. It's also why the guides on this site cite their sources.
Funded by our community
Bentley's Playhouse has been funded almost entirely by the people who follow along on Instagram and Facebook. Donations go to the animals.
We treat that trust as something to account for. Receipts, vet bills and proof of expenses have always been posted publicly, and now they live on our transparency page too.
Teaching, too
It's not just about the dogs we rescue. We share stories, tips and resources so more people become thoughtful pet parents and advocates, and so adoption becomes the first choice. This website is part of that.
What's next: Fénix Animal Project
In August 2026, exactly four years after Bentley's Playhouse began, Cata launched Fénix Animal Project (opens in a new tab), named after Fénix. It grew out of the rescue's work: a free, global platform connecting animal rescue organizations, donors and volunteers.
What we believe
Adopt, don't shop. Every adoption makes room for another dog to be saved.
A found dog has a family until we know otherwise. We always look for the people who love them first.
Kindness goes to people, too. Nobody learns by being shamed. We'd rather explain, help and point the way.
Honesty about what we can do. We're a small, volunteer-run rescue. We'll tell you plainly when we can help, and point you to someone who can when we can't.
For the love of all animals.
Rescue stories
Stories of the dogs who have come through the playhouse will be shared here, with their families' permission.
