Before the dog arrives

• Everyone in the household agrees and knows the house rules
• A quiet spot set up with a bed or crate, away from busy areas
• Food the rescue has been using, plus bowls
• Collar or harness, ID tag with my phone number, and a leash
• Dog-proofed the home (cords, trash, medications, small objects, cleaning products)
• Checked fences, gates and door habits for escape routes
• Chosen a vet

First week

• Vet visit booked
• Microchip registration transferred to my name with current details
• Rabies vaccine current and Miami-Dade license tag (dogs over 4 months)
• A simple routine for meals, walks, potty breaks and sleep
• Kept visitors and new experiences to a minimum

First months

• Started short, reward-based training sessions
• Introduced other pets slowly, on neutral ground
• Noted what my dog loves and what worries them
• Know who to call at the rescue if I need support
